Step by step

The right university

Austria's 23 public universities include general universities (Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Klagenfurt, Linz), technical universities (TU Wien, TU Graz, Montanuniversität Leoben), medical, veterinary and economics universities (WU) and universities of the arts. In addition, 21 universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) offer practice-oriented programmes with their own fees and admission procedures.

Admission to a Masters is decided by the university on the basis of equivalence between the student's bachelor's degree and the Austrian degree that leads into the programme. The quality of education is consistently high across institutions; the choice depends on the field of study and the language of instruction.

The right programme

Austria has more than 350 courses taught in English, mostly in engineering, IT, science and management at TU Wien, TU Graz, JKU Linz, Montanuniversität Leoben and the University of Vienna. The dean of each course decides whether your Indian degree is accepted, and may ask you to take extra subjects. Deadlines for students from outside the EU differ by months between universities, and the degree check before admission takes ten to twelve weeks.

MastersHelp finds the courses where your degree is likely to be accepted, confirms each course's deadline and admission process on the university's own website, and times your file so that the check finishes before the window closes. From all the courses in your field, we narrow down to the five best fits and submit full applications through the universities' portals.

Requirements and verification

Equivalence (Gleichwertigkeit). The university assesses whether the Indian bachelor's degree is equivalent to the relevant Austrian degree. The assessment is made per programme, may attach supplementary courses (Auflagen), and takes about ten to twelve weeks from a complete file. The outcome is the admission notice (Zulassungsbescheid), which is also required for the residence permit.

Legalisation. The residence authority requires the birth certificate and the police clearance certificate to be apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs and translated by a sworn German translator. MastersHelp coordinates both; the charges (about ₹8,000 to 15,000) are paid by the student.

University portals. Applications are made through the universities' own systems (u:space at the University of Vienna, TISS at TU Wien, TUGRAZonline at TU Graz). Accounts are created and the files uploaded by MastersHelp on the student's behalf.

Language requirements

English-taught programmes require proof of English at level B2, usually IELTS 6.5. German-taught programmes require German at A2 at the time of application and C1 by admission, demonstrated through a supplementary examination (Ergänzungsprüfung) or a recognised certificate.

IELTS preparation is included in the service: a 28-day programme of daily live online classes, question sessions with recordings, mock tests and registration guidance. The examination fee (about ₹19,000) is paid to the test provider.

Application procedure

Application windows for non-EU students close well before the semester begins. For the October 2027 intake: University of Innsbruck 15 May, TU Wien 15 July, University of Vienna 3 August. Programmes with an admission procedure may close in March or April.

Because the equivalence assessment takes ten to twelve weeks, files are submitted as early as the portals allow. The statement of purpose is read by the admissions office and again by the residence authority when it decides the permit. MastersHelp prepares a separate statement for each of the five shortlisted universities, written individually and reviewed with the student, together with a European-style CV.

Costs of education and living

Tuition. Non-EU students at public universities pay €726.72 per semester plus the ÖH student union fee of €26.20, about ₹1.6 lakh a year. Universities of applied sciences set their own fees.

Living funds. For the residence permit, students under 24 must show €722.58 per month for twelve months in their own account; students aged 24 and over, €1,308.39 per month. The funds remain the student's own.

Insurance. Travel medical insurance with €30,000 cover is needed for entry. After arrival, students register for ÖGK student self-insurance at €78.84 per month.

Typical outlay on arrival: deposit for a place to stay about ₹50,000; flight and initial purchases about ₹1.5 lakh. Figures vary by city.

Residence permit and Visa D

Non-EU students apply for a Residence Permit - Student (Aufenthaltsbewilligung Studierende) before departure. The application is filed in person at the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi with the admission notice, apostilled and translated civil documents, proof of funds, insurance, a place to stay for at least three months and a motivation letter. The fee is €218. Processing may take up to 90 days.

Once the permit is approved, a Visa D for entry (€195 plus the VFS charge) is issued through VFS Global. Within three days of arrival the student registers the address (Meldezettel) and collects the permit card. MastersHelp prepares the file, books the appointment and conducts a mock interview.

First steps in Austria

Place to stay. OeAD student housing and the Studentenwerk halls accept applications before arrival; MastersHelp also searches through its alumni network and verified providers. The permit requires proof of a place to stay for the first three months.

Registration and enrolment. Address registration within three days, ÖGK insurance registration, collection of the residence permit card, and enrolment at the university in the first weeks of the semester.

Internships. MastersHelp gives an initial internship search in the student's field with Austrian companies, together with application guidance and CV tailoring.
